Navigating Difficult Dialogues: The Power of Octopus and Sodalite

It has been nearly four years since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time marked by extremes. Families, friends, and loved ones were torn apart, both figuratively and literally, as racial and ethnic violence intensified, and communities worldwide were ravaged by the virus. Even if one was fortunate enough to be unaffected by these traumas, the emotional and interpersonal upheaval caused by the state of global politics still left its mark. As a Gemini and an artist, I naturally navigate the nuances of the grey areas. However, during this tumultuous period, I struggled to hold onto my true nature in the face of what felt like a constant threat to my values and morals, particularly when it came from those I deeply love.

The question arose: Can I continue to love them while staying true to my beliefs? Were the actions and words I witnessed from my family truly reflective of their morals and values, or were they driven by fear, despite their seemingly hurtful nature? Without clear answers, I found myself caught in the fractures that many experienced during that time, and I am still on a journey of healing from those divisions.

This brings me to the significance of Octopus and Sodalite. While meditating one day, seeking healthier ways to engage in disagreements within my romantic relationship (which, interestingly, had nothing to do with politics), the image of an octopus surfaced in my mind. Intrigued, I made a mental note to explore the symbolism associated with this creature.

“When you know the ways of the octopus, you can see both sides of every issue and find creative solutions.”

This quote about the octopus resonated with me. It encapsulated the ability to perceive multiple perspectives and maintain emotional control. I thought, perhaps I could apply these qualities even when arguing about mundane tasks like cooking or doing the dishes. Excited by this revelation, I promptly ordered Sodalite beads, associated with the characteristics of the octopus, to create the mala mentioned above. However, despite having all the supplies, I inexplicably delayed working on the mala.

It wasn’t until I acquired a chunk of Sodalite during a magical outing with a friend that I fully recognized the profound impact this stone held. Sodalite propelled me back to the mindset I had during the early days of the pandemic, when I recognized the need to reassess my approach to my familial relationships and the divisions caused by political strife. While it remains important to maintain boundaries, Sodalite reminded me of the power of holding those with differing opinions in a space of compassion and understanding. Ultimately, this approach benefits us all, fostering growth and healing.

And so the “Octopus Wisdom Sodalite Mala” was born.

Mantra: “I see and honor the light in all beings and hold them in a space of compassion.”
